Backlash Back On Track

After much thought, Smallcreep has returned onto my "To Do" roster...
With Rob and me listening to more and more diverse stuff, and with a few nudges from friends and fans (yes - the band actually has fans...) we've agreed to go pick things up on our unfinished 3rd album, BACKLASH.
It was a project that went on for about 6 or 7 years, spawning so many ideas it became unmanageable. We threw out about 30 of them and started over. And the same thing happened again.
So we left it and carried on with our lives.

But lately, we've both discussed it and decided that we actually were incredibly proud of the stuff that was happening and coming out of the sessions, and so we aim to revisit the 60 or so remaining ideas (almost finished, semi-finished, rough sketchpads and more...) and try and nail the album we always meant to make.
There's studio setups to sort out and a shedload of files and roughcuts to review, but "THE MIGHTY 'CREEP" (© Kris Barford) are up for it and we're looking forward to doing great things again.
And bickering.
We always bicker.

We'll be putting out updates - and possibly some sneaky peeks of the new stuff here at the new Smallcreep '09 blog...

Yay! :)
Hope you'll have fun working on it and maybe the finished album can also increase the current fan number of 8 on Facebook. ;)

And I think the picture you chose is one of the best band pics.

Btw, will you be changing anything about the music style of Smallcreep so many years after the last album? When most of the songs and song ideas are already a few years old I gather it'll be much like what you've did back then and I was wondering if you intend to add new elements or styles to it, now that you're all "older and wiser"?

To be brutally honest, I have no idea :-)
The various roughs and sketchpads and 'almost ready' works were already quite a step apart from anything on the previous 2 CDs. The songs were actually in general a bit more "song-like" and the instrumentals were far more complex.
Also, in recovering the files and setting up the new gear, we've decided not to use the old Akai sampler we used before (as it's huge, unweildy and unreliable) so will have to completely re-do all the sampling, meaning new versions of the guitar textures, FX, breakbeats etc - and again that's likely to change things further.
But change is good.
I pulled over 304 song files from the old PowerBook - about 15 of which are virtually finished (although we'll need to update all the arrangements once all the MIDI gear is hooked up and we've got Logic up and running ot handle the programming and production side of stuff) and a further 30 or so deserve reviewing again.
We're also discussing involving a *proper* vocalist.
I'd say, expect stuff to sound a bit different but still very much "us". Songs might lean a bit more towards Depeche Mode or Linkin Park (in a good way) than stay in the old shouty Smallcreep style, and the instrumentals are going to be a bit in King Crimson (or their 'ProjeKcts') territory.
I'm sure there'll be plenty to enjoy though :-)

I'm liking that outlook! Can't wait to hear the results when it's finished. :D
