New Website - Scott Redding 2010

The second week of running my own business has been probably as busy as the first one (though admittedly the first week was made busy because of rushing BigZee in and out the vets - he’s on the mend now...) - and as well as signing off an iPhone application project (more of which in coming days) I ended the week with a marathon creative dev and build that was a one-day intensive project that I’m dead chuffed with. It’s going to require ongoing development and maintenance, but it’s a good cause and totally worth it.

Basically it’s furthering the work of the pimping of Scott Redding’s campaign to get a 2010 Moto2 ride that I publicised previously. It’s a website called "Scott Redding 2010" and it aims to push publicity and interaction with the cause way beyond Facebook. With the “Scott Redding 2010” project I delivered a website for the Scott Redding Supporters Club to help focus attention on their mission outside of the Facebook environment where it had largely operated before. Whilst over 300 million people use Facebook, over 6.7 billion people use the internet as a whole so it made sense to ensure that the campaign to try and secure Scott a Moto2 ride for the 2010 MotoGP season reached as broad an audience as possible.

The site will serve as an ongoing news magazine to cover events and fundraising activities run by the Supporters Club, to ensure as many internet users as possible find out about the cause and to enable easy access to instant online donation mechanisms.
Like I say, a good cause, and hopefully one that will engage all those many potential fans and supporters who don’t use Facebook.

Please share the news and the link, and ideally make a donation too if you can - Scott’s a superb rider and *anything* that can be done to move his career forward is a good cause.

GOOD CAUSE ALERT: Scott Redding Fundraiser

It has been announced that there will be a fundraising event early next year which aims to raise money to help top Brit MotoGP talent Scott Redding get some kind of Moto2 ride for 2010.

Scott, who's had a bit of pig of a final 125cc season really - a rough and undeservedly unrewarding time for someone so hugely gifted and committed - so far has nothing lined up, so it goes without saying that as a huge fan I hope sincerely that the event can help make a serious contribution to supporting his efforts.

The Fundraising event will take place at Bransons Motorcycles in Gloucester and will include an auction where they will be auctioning off his helmet, leathers, gloves, boots and other items. Scott will be there to meet people and sign autographs. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased through the Scott Redding supporters club on Facebook or can be purchased on the day.

Click here for more information on the Facebook group page...

Please help support one of our top Brit MotoGP riders in pursuing his career!

FULL DETAILS:

Scott Redding supporters club fundraiser.
Date - Saturday 16 January
Time - 17:30 to 23:00
Location - Bransons Motorcycles,
12-14 Spinnnaker Rd,
Hempsted,
Gloucester, GL2 5FD

Stuck On Crimbo Gifts? Try Riders For Health

The festive period is just around the corner, and this year you can help save lives in Africa with Riders for Health, the official charity of MotoGP, by sending one of their Christmas gifts to a friend or relative.

With a Christmas gift you can help Riders for Health use reliable motorcycles to get health workers in Africa on the road, so they can deliver regular, lifesaving health care to even the most isolated villages.

Riders for Health also have a catalogue of virtual gifts that you can send this Christmas. By choosing to send a gift donation you can help provide a health worker with protective clothing so that they can ride their motorcycle safely, or a set of tools so they can carry out the daily maintenance which will mean their motorcycle never breaks down and they will never miss an appointment.

Just £10 could provide two weeks fuel for a health worker, which will let them cover 300km and provide health care to hundreds of families. £55 could provide a day’s training in safe riding and maintenance for a health worker, so they can deliver health services on a regular basis to even the most remote communities.

Each gift comes with a card illustrating your purchase and explaining how it is helping to save lives. You will also receive a Riders Christmas card that you can personalise and send to the recipient. You can find out more at www.riders.org.

You can also support Riders’ work in Africa by ordering Riders for Health Christmas cards on their online shop. Click here to see the range. These cards are a great way of raising awareness of how motorcycles are saving lives in Africa. And, importantly, all the money made from these cards will go directly to support Riders for Health’s work in Africa.

One In The Eye...

Cool - Private Eye have published a "Colemanballs" I sent in, in the current issue - 1239.
It's one of the many clangers from Eurosport stand-in MotoGP commentator Carlton Kirby from the Catalunya GP a couple of weeks back....
"Two Spanish flags for the crowd to see – one of them Japanese… "

He's seriously awful though. I should have just sent them a tape of all 3 races and let them publish the lot.
Thankfully the marvellous Toby Moody and Julian Ryder were back on the case this weekend at Assen - despite it being a bit of a downer for my hero Alvaro Bautista in the 250cc race. I say 'bit of a downer' - it was a real huuuuuuuuuge downer actually.
Still - could have been worse... Carlton Kirby could have been commentating too.

MotoGP.com Release Awesome iPhone App

I have a (possibly ever-so slightly deserved) reputation as a bit of a geek / nerd / saddo when it comes to anything Mac or iPhone related. So, imagine my joy then, when I was pointed at a dedicated iPhone app from MotoGP.com

Let's face it, MotoGP and Dorna have been way more innovative, smart and genuinely rewarding in their approach to online delivery than F1 - and far better at doing something of genuine interest to punters.
And so perhaps this is no great surprise. Doesn't mean that it's not worth a bit of a rave though...
It's a thoroughly tasty piece of work from start to finish, playing both to their own strengths in content and data, and the iPhone's strengths in interface and usability.

The key to it of course is dynamic data - in this case, live timing with race lap, rider position, lap time, gap time, and top speed. And nice touches like rotating the iPhone into 'horizontal' position to get a full live timing view, and live commentary from the MotoGP crew as well.
The app also provides access to race results, championship results, latest news, rider profiles, competition calendars and schedules, and a huge photo gallery.
Aside from all the good functionality, it also has the MotoGP.com excellent branding DNA, and attention to detail, in buckets. It's one of the slickest looking apps I've seen. (*And I've seen more than enough to prove I should get out more...)

To be honest it's a steal at only £1.79 and certainly an invaluable addition to the tech tools of anyone who loves MotoGP and their gadgets.

For some bizarre reason MotoGP.com have disabled 'embedding' of their Youtube demo of the app - which is a real shame as it'd be nice to just plonk it on the page here and share it on other sites and blogs, but if you click on this link then you can watch it anyway...

Finally, if you need no further persuading then just click here to go directly to the app in iTunes...

Alvaro Bautista Grungy '09 Desktop Wallpaper

Even though I tend to stick away from my MotoGP geekdom and nerdity on this blog, there's times where it seems right to let the odd post slip through.
Like now...
I've just completed the first in a set of 2009 Alvaro Bautista desktop wallpapers which hopefully bring stylings and treatments on a big step from last year, whilst remaining stuffed with my basic design DNA.
The first one is now available for download, and comes in 1440x900 and 1280x800 widescreen options... A lush, deep and grungy treatment, finished off with a cracking action photo from the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, and a discreet rack of sponsor logos. I've tried to make the composition totally appropriate for both Mac and Windows desktop layouts.

2009 Bikesports In iCal

For any of you who may be into motorbike sports (or at least the main world championships in various categories) I've made a bunch of iCals to help keep tabs on all the important dates in 2009. iCal is an application on the Mac, which uses the open .ics calendar format - which means that you can also use these in various Windows and Linux applications such as Microsoft Works (Version 8 or higher), WinDates, Mozilla Calendar, Sunbird and Zimbra.

Not Always MotoGP But Always Hot

(*Above: the kind of thing you'll find at MotoGPHotties.com... You pervert.)

Given that this blog is so random anyway, I hope you'll forgive the blatant plug for another website - as I'm duty bound to pass on the word.
Although it has the word "MotoGP" in the title (STOP FALLING ASLEEP THERE!!!), MotoGP Hotties - (MotoGPHotties.com - brought to you by the people who made the popular MotoGP Hotties application for Facebook) is probably bound to appeal way beyond those interested in the racing.
A website that's particularly aimed at the laydeez (and a few of the guys too) it's a pretty much daily dose of totty from the various categories of motorcyle racing: MotoGP itself, and its lower categories - 250cc and 125cc, and also World Superbikes, British Superbikes, World Supersport, the Spanish CEV championship and more.

There's already the odd bit of partial, generous nudity and some of the poses do lean towards the homoerotic. It's all basically good clean fun though and looks like building into a pretty vast ongoing archive to keep happy all those who are either:
a) interested in much more than the bikes and the racing,
b) not able to give a toss about the bikes or the racing.

So if you fancy a smile (and actually some odd snippets of useful/useless info too) then do point your browser at MotoGP Hotties...

Why I Support Alvaro Bautista

As well as recently finding MotoGP to be, by and large, a lot more fun to watch than my ‘favourite’ sport - F1 (which has become an ever-more boring, redundant procession covered in the most inane and infantile fashion by TV and other media... phew, rant over...) - I also found that quite often 250cc and 125cc are more exciting than the top class.

Racing, overtaking, mixing it up - second after second, corner after corner - race in race out.
And when I saw how Alvaro Bautista rode 100%, totally committed, fearless, balls-out, and yet still with a degree of maturity that allows him to find limits and to cope with misery as well as victory, I knew I’d found somebody I really wanted to support.

I also reckoned that Alvaro - or ‘Bati’ to use his nickname - deserved better coverage in the English speaking world though... his official website was (and still is at the time of writing) entirely in Spanish, and nowhere was there a proper fan forum.

I got in touch with Tamara, who I’d come to know via a LiveJournal Bati group, and suggested we build a proper bunch of sites; full-on professional ones that would cover off all the basic information and download needs of fans and also a really cool forum. We now both run these as well as our own blogs in a network of connected sites that pull in many hundreds of thousands of visits each year and have a draw on fans in over 120 countries.

It’s been worth every single bit of effort - and there’s been an awful lot of effort, believe me - and if you fancy a quick sneaky peek at the sites, then here they are:
